Waxing After Skin Cancer
Feeling comfortable in your own body is especially important after a cancer therapy. PINK Waxing Expert Aylin Kizilkaya reveals what to pay attention to when waxing after cancer treatment. In addition, you will learn step by step how to get rid of those annoying hairs on upper lip and eyebrows.
“Basically, it is recommended to avoid waxing during the cancer therapy.”
Once the chemotherapy is complete and the hair has grown back after a few months, customers can have their unwanted hair removed. Waxing is possible again. After the treatment, the hair follicles usually work normally again and hair growth resumes. Basically, it is recommended to avoid waxing during the cancer therapy, as the skin becomes very sensitive due to treatments, for various reasons. For example, as a result of chemotherapy the skin is more sensitive overall, and the barrier function of the skin suffers – especially the skin in the facial area. Even if the facial hair remained intact from the cancer therapy, waxing during a cancer treatment would be too stressful for the already irritated skin.
Overall, the burden of chemotherapy on the skin has been reduced in recent years and many customers do not have to change their usual facial care routines during chemotherapy.
Severe skin damage after radiation is luckily nowadays less common. Nevertheless, irradiated skin remains permanently sensitive, as the hair follicles in this area are often destroyed.
“Prerequisite for a professional waxing is an intact skin”
If there is a history of skin cancer, then no waxing should be carried out without the consent of the oncologist or dermatologist even after completion of the therapy. Depending on the type of skin cancer, the physician may decide for or against a cosmetic treatment. We beauticians are on the safe side. Before waxing, the beautician should make sure that the client’s skin is intact. The skin should have recovered well from the side effects of cancer therapy and show no irritation. With the help of a questionnaire, the beautician can record the current skin condition.
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE EYEBROWS
In order to fully exploit the potential of the wax and to be able to “push in” as many coarse hair and downy hair into the wax as possible, you should apply the wax with pressure against the hair growth direction. Apply it between the eyebrows.
To shape eyebrows really accurately, you must correct the eyebrows both from above and below. Many customers are bothered by the fine hair around their eyebrows and it cannot be grabbed with the tweezers.
Hairs are also often found on the eyelids. These can be very easily removed with wax. Approximately 90% of the hairs can be removed with the hot wax and you can then take care of the rest with the tweezers or the threading technique.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS UPPER LIP
There is hardly a customer without any upper lip hair. Start in the middle and apply the wax towards the nose against the hair growth direction.
Then do the sides: Especially in the corner of the mouth and on the lips, there can be many fine and unsightly hair. Here you really have to push the hairs into the wax with good pressure. After a short drying time of about 15 seconds, you can remove the wax patch.
THE 5 MOST IMPORTANT WAXING TREATMENT RULES
With our extensive Waxing Manuals, you will learn various waxing techniques and receive detailed step-by-step instructions – each tailored to the area of the body to be depilated.
1. Heat the wax at the lowest temperature possible
First use a cotton pad and some PINK Skin Cleanser to remove impurities, sweat and cream residues from the nasal area. Thereafter, apply the gentle PINK Pre-Waxing Oil to protect the skin – a wafer-thin layer is sufficient.
2. Protect the skin
Before waxing, the beautician should apply a wafer-thin layer of Pre-Waxing Oil to the skin. This creates a protective film, which ensures that the wax does not stick to the skin and removes hardly any dead skin cells. This is a crucial aspect, especially with sensitive skin. The fewer skin flakes are removed, the less the skin is irritated. Classic waxes can be applied to the same place a maximum of one to two times due to the low tolerance. The new generation of waxes can be applied multiple times without irritating the skin due to the high-quality ingredients, the oils contained and the use of the Pre-Waxing oil. This is especially important for dry and sensitive skin.
3. Use the correct waxing technique
Correct waxing technique is a decisive factor for waxing after a cancer therapy. Beauticians should avoid working with roll-ons and fleece strips on the sensitive skin, especially on the face, underarms and the intimate area. You can work with hot wax much more gently. Small oval wax patches are formed on the skin using a wooden spatula. After a drying time of about 15 seconds, the wax is peeled off by hand. This technique is perceived as much less painful.
4. Properly remove even the shortest hairs
In order to be able to remove unsightly hairs as short as 1 mm, you need a special wax and the correct waxing technique. In the past, wax was applied in the hair growth direction and removed against the hair growth direction. This is still the same today for 3-4 mm hairs. However, no 1-2 mm hairs can be removed this way. Depilation of extremely short hair requires that the hair is put up when applying the wax and then fully grabbed by wax. The new generation of waxes can easily remove hairs 3-4 days after shaving. This also corresponds to the wishes of your customers – no customer wants to grow hair for two weeks these days.
5. After care
For after care, high-quality soothing gels should be applied immediately after depilation. These may contain, for example, Spirulina algae, Aloe Vera or micro silver. Many customers also like” to go” masks. These are after care masks that soak in immediately. After waxing, the customer should avoid sun baths and scrubs for 24 hours. Swimming pools and sauna sessions can lead to unnecessary skin irritation. The beautician can provide her customers with an information sheet with behavioural suggestions after waxing and these precautions should be followed.
