Waxing in Midsummer – Here’s What You Should Know

Nearly 40 degrees in June, then a cold spell and now more record temperatures – the summer of 2019 has a lot to offer! But do not worry: No matter what the next weeks bring, with our Summer Waxing Hacks, every heat wave leaves you cold.

Technique & Temperature

While during the rest of the year, many customers only want their lower legs to be waxed, in the summer months, they ask for a depilation of the entire leg. Within this treatment, the back of the thighs can be challenging. Although this area can be depilated in prone position, another lying position allows for much easier and faster work: lying on her back, the customer pulls a leg with both hands at knee height towards her belly. In this position, the back of the thigh is stretched much better and the waxing is perceived as more pleasant.

At extremely high room temperatures of over 33 °C, the drying time of the wax may increase slightly. Therefore, take a closer look at the Next Generation patches on very hot days to see if the wax has completely cooled before you remove it. If your treatment room is strongly heated due to direct sunlight, use an air conditioner or a fan. Customers and employees will be grateful, too!

Skin & Sweat

To avoid excessive sweating and heat build-up, your customers should opt for light and airy clothes on the day of waxing as well as the day after. If a customer still sweats heavily during their underarm waxing, you can regularly pat the area dry with a tissue, so that the wax sticks well.

Inflammation of the hair follicles (folliculitis), is the most common side effect after waxing. It occurs most often on men’s back and chest as well as women’s cheeks. About 1-2 days after the hair removal, small, white pimples with red halo emerge. The causative agent is the widespread and actually harmless bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. After waxing, the germ can penetrate unhindered into the hair canal and trigger the inflammation. Increased perspiration in the summer months favors this process.

Important to know: Folliculitis has nothing to do with unclean work or the products used. You can avoid this skin reaction by diligently informing your customers with the help of a consultation and anamnesis sheet, offering test patches to customers who have never been waxed in these areas of risk and thorough cleansing.

Prevention & Products

Even after waxing, sweating is an important issue: Remind your clients to postpone sweat-inducing activities like sports or sex until the skin has calmed down. If the underarms have been waxed, deodorant should not be applied during the first 24-48 hours after treatment. The only exception: zinc oxide-based products, free from aluminum and alcohol.

Back home, your customers are best advised to take a quick shower to wash off sweat and impurities and prevent inflammation. If they are wondering which home products are fine to use, you can recommend light lotions which soothe and are absorbed quickly, such as after sun products.

In the first two days after waxing, your clients should avoid direct exposure to sunlight. In any case, well-tolerated sun protection is a must; best would be gel or lotion texture to prevent build-up of heat.
